Reader to Leader

Loving our City through Literacy

7 Guiding Beliefs

  1. We must proclaim the Kingdom of God in words and actions
  2. We are called to serve the city where God has planted us
  3. Our city has great problems but also great potential
  4. The most urgent need of our city in our time is to expand educational excellence to reach every child
  5. The most critical issue in education now is early literacy
  6. We can change the course of a child’s life through individualized reading tutoring
  7. Today’s at-risk children can be tomorrow’s world-changing leaders through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit

Long-Term Vision

The name “Reader to Leader” was chosen because we believe literacy is the first step towards a grander vision of raising up leaders who can empower communities to overcome generational poverty. We believe the greatest impact on at-risk neighborhoods will come from well-equipped, Spirit-filled, transformational leaders who grew up in those neighborhoods and return to work in them or others like them.

3-5 Years Expand next year to schools near Frazer such as Garrett Elementary. In future years, expand to every at-risk public elementary school by partnering with other churches and sharing best practices.

5-6 Years Develop a model for a Middle School Mentoring Ministry. Mentors continue to provide academic support while nurturing healthy emotional choices through these turbulent transition years.

6-10 Years Implement a Leadership Development program for High School students. Continue to provide academic and emotional support while challenging and equipping young people to become transformational leaders.

10-15 Years Expand the Leadership Development program to support students through college with a special focus on leaders who will commit to stay in Montgomery and work in the at-risk neighborhoods they grew up in.
