Finding Jesus: Christ in the Old Testament Week 4—When God Moves in Next Door Moses and The Tabernacle “And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.” Exodus 25:8-9 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 Two Major Themes… • Sacrifice is required for the removal of sin. Key Word = Forgiveness “Aaron (the high priest) shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the curtain, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.” Leviticus 16:15 NRSV “For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus, who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us.” Romans 3:23-25 NLT Old System of Sacrifice (Tabernacle) New System of Sacrifice (Christ) Was temporary (Hebrews 8:13) Is permanent (Hebrews 7:21) Used the blood of animals (Leviticus 16:15) Uses the blood of Christ (Hebrews 10:5-12) Required many sacrifices (Leviticus 22:19) Requires one sacrifice (Hebrews 9:28) Needed perfect animals (Leviticus 22:19) Needs a perfect life (Hebrews 5:9) • Walking with God requires obedience to his laws. Key Word = Sanctification "Say this to your people, the Israelites: I, the LORD, am your God. So do not act like the people in Egypt, where you used to live, or like the people of Canaan, where I am taking you. You must not imitate their way of life. You must obey all my regulations and be careful to keep my laws, for I, the LORD, am your God. If you obey my laws and regulations, you will find life through them. I am the LORD.” Leviticus 18:2-5 NLT “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12-13 NRSV Two Major Truths… • God’s grace forgives you for the act of sin. • God’s grace frees you from the power sin. Let’s Go Fishing Matthew 4:18-22 “18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.” (NIV)
